Just want to mention, that geography goes far beyond displaying dots and other geometries on a map or mapping application. Shure geography is about investigating spatial relationships, and because of this maps are a very good way (if not the best) to document research outcomes. But there is a big difference between geotagging photos or displaying gps routes from hobbyist and creating maps of valued quantitative information about spatial relations. It is the process of creating the information (data) which will be displayed on a map, what geographers do. The technology of bringing this information into a map or mapping application is a technique which is also known as cartography. So maybe neocartography would fit it better... :)
