We are hiring a post-doctoral scholar to work on an NSF-funded project
entitled Making Oceans Worlds: The Big Data Revolution and Oceans
Governance. The successful candidate will work with our interdisciplinary
team of social scientists, marine biologists, geospatial scientists and
information scientists to contribute to a project examining the ways that
‘big data’ are intersecting with global and regional oceans governance
efforts. The post-doctoral fellow will work with the project team to
develop archival techniques and impact analysis. The postdoc will work with
an archivist at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Odum Institute for
Research in the Social Sciences and will utilize the UNC Dataverse, an
open-source repository software application for archiving, sharing, and
accessing research data. The archivist will provide the post-doc with
training in archival methods and guidance on the development of metadata.

The post-doc’s home department will be the UNC Department of Geography, and
the post-doc will work closely with and have opportunities for mentorship
from the interdisciplinary project team, which includes: Dr. Elizabeth
Havice (UNC Chapel Hill Department of Geography), Dr. Lisa Campbell (Duke
University, Nicholas School of the Environment), Dr. Pat Halpin (Duke
University, Nicholas School of the Environment), and Dr. Andre Boustany
(Monterey Bay Aquarium and Duke University, Nicholas School of the
Environment). The postdoctoral candidate will have access to resources
available via UNC’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and will be encouraged
to take full advantage of professional development opportunities at UNC broadly
as well as in the Department of Geography, and at Duke University and the
Monterey Bay Aquarium.

*Location:* This is a position through the University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill. All work can be conducted remotely, and the post-doc will not
be required to live in the Chapel Hill area. However, we would be delighted
for the post-doc to join our community in Chapel Hill and the Research
Triangle to engage in the rich academic opportunities in the area.

*Qualifications:* Successful candidates will have familiarity with global
and regional oceans governance, and familiarity and/or experience with big
data and its applications to oceans policy and governance. The successful
candidate must be highly attentive to detail, have persistence and
enthusiasm for hunting for data, and excellent communication skills. The
successful candidate will have experience with managing large datasets,
proficiency in access or excel (preferably access), and preferably will
have competence in GIS platforms, R, and/or Stata.
