What's probably happening is an upsetting of the dominance/submission
pattern.  Someone's trying to take over the top spot.  This is much,
much more common among females as it's usually triggered by their
hormonal changes (puberty or menopause), but obviously there are
exception.  The gerbils I owned where it happened were impossible to
make peace with.  I had to separate them.
