Hi there....
First off, I think it basically depends on the gerbil. About half of
mine enjoy running around in the balls. At least, they seem to. They get
excited when I bring the ball out, and leap in when I open them. Others
really could care less. I let the critter decide... If he or she doesn't
wanna play in one, no problem...there are other games in town.
Most of mine love the wheels (habitrail safari type), and only a couple
of them have done any serious chewing on them. I was amazed at that.

As to this problem.... you can't. Just plan on sweeping/vacuuming after
their run time. Their little messes are usually solid and easily cleaned
up.
