I have 6 over stuffed and over active gerbils, now I ask you:

Provide them with a deep layer of litter for digging.

Gerbils like to use smooth surfaces for their bathrooms. So if you have
Jars, cans, or dishes in their tank remove them. Platforms and the roofs
of houses will also be used for urinating on, these can be washed with
hot water and mild soap. Then the food dish can be placed there. Also,
1 1/2 and 2 inch holes can be drilled on rooftops and platforms to make
it harder for urine to collect. The gerbils will be able to go through
these holes like swiss cheese. If using Habitrail/ SAM/Hartz Playcity
enclosures put lots of litter in the lookout towers and have the tubes
running horizontally or diagonal.
