It's unlikely that a joint of this kind would hold, especially with
gerbils scratching at it.  Could be a safety hazard for the gerbils too,
if they managed to pull enough silicone out to make a gap large enough
for a paw to fit through.

You'd have to attach another piece of glass to the outside, to cover the
joint and add strength.

I'd just save up for a larger tank if I were you -- putting two smaller
ones together this way will likely just ruin both tanks.

Or, get a few habitrail tubes and a cover for each tank with
habitrail-size holes in them.  About $25 for the parts, from
pets.com...  but for $25 you could probably get a decent-sized empty
aquarium.
