One problem we had was we wanted a new term. One that did not have
baggage from another animals. Doe and buck, which I actually quite like,
are originally terms for male and female deer. Buck deer are aggressive
and noble animals that have a harem of females. Does are more passive
and simply accept what the males decide as far as breeding goes. This is
totally unlike gerbils. But it is like rabbits which is why the term has
been adopted there.
