A simple ten gallon aquarium would be better. As Julian has pointed
out, when you have more "things" cluttering up a cage, then you have
more "things" for the gerbils to fight over.
I think you'll find that a ten gallon (or better) aquarium holds a
cage divider better, too. Since you have the weekend coming up, why
not buy a ten gallon aquarium at a pet store (they're not very
expensive), set up a new cage divider, and then observe them all
weekend. If you see that the cage divider will stand all weekend,
then you won't have to worry about it falling over while you're at
school. The more time they spend in the split cage arrangement, the
better.
But at any rate, if they're in there all night, they should be okay
during the day.
