If they live together over 6 mo with no fighting is it safe to place a
female pair as pets? Or is that still risky?

What do most people here do with the females they do not want to breed from
since being social they likely dont want to be all alone in a cage? Do you
ever place females as pets only and if so under what conditions? Id hate to
place 1 female as a pet to have it become depressed and act out or place 2
females as pets and have them fight and injure eachother. Most people I
place gerbils with only want pets, not breeding pairs. So far Ive been
keeping my girls together (introduced very young and no problems yet- but
they are only about 5 mo now) because I only want a few breeding pairs, not
so many I cant keep up :)

For those of you that have kept females together successfully- what seems to
be the deciding factor in making them get along best- when they are
introduced? cage size? duplicates of allt eh cage toys....? Many years
ago I had a different gerbil colony and the females in that colony lived
together without much problems, but apparently that was exceptional and I
wasnt pay attention back them to what we did that may have made them be more
harmonious together.
