Maybe if you would spell hamster like hamster, you would find more
information. There are some very good hamster pages!
Be aware that there are several hamster species. Some dwarf species, that
can be kept in small groups, and which are less nocturnal, and the old
plain golden hamster (comes in different colours, though), which is
solitary and nocturnal, so will be awake when the children have long go to
bed. A golden or syrian hamster is not very suitable for children, I think,
because they sleep all day, and are very grumpy, and likely to bite, when
awakened.
Some dwarf hamsters, like winter whites can be very friendly, but you have
to be lucky with them. Gerbils are just more of a kind, curious nature, and
certainly more active!

They are just so curious and lively! And they hardly smell, being desert
animals!

Good!

Males are less problematic!
