Some more reasons that people are intolerant of gerbils and rodents:
1) Some people have deep seated fears of rodents.
I have one friend who refuses to enter my house now that she knows I have
rats.
Last week I went to dinner at a friend's house where 1 cat and 1 dog live as
well. Very sweet, friendly animals. One of the guests was so afraid of the
two animals, that at the sight of the dog walking towards her sent her running
and screaming out of the house. The dog is a very elderly cocker spaniel.
Later the cat started walking in her general direction. This person jump,
screamed, and ran as far from that cat as she could go. I just don't
understand such deep-seated fears.
Other reasons people don't like gerbils (or other rodents):
2) Gerbils can be annoyingly noisy; their wheels squeak, they constantly chew
things and dig. Some people are very sensitive to noise.
3) Cages/tanks can get a bit smelly. Especially if you use any plastic or
metal in the enclosure that the gerbil pees all over. Or if you have so many
enclosures that you don't clean very often.
That's all the reason I can think that people might not like gerbils.
