Use a split cage and leave the same bedding in throughout. The whole
point of the split cage is to enable the two gerbils to get used to the
scent of the other gerbil in their territory before they are introduced.
The golden rule with anything like this is to make sure that you do not
introduce any unnecessary factors to the equation.
