If you hold a gerbil gently but firmly with two fingers by the base of
the tail, exactly where it joins the body, it will just sit all day on
your other hand. I have never known a gerbil jump away when held like
this. I have even taught people who have never touched gerbils before to
do it in 30 seconds and watched them hold a gerbil for some hours in a
studio with a noisy TV audience without trouble.

It wasn't even one of our gerbils, it was one of Sue's!
