After these last two incidents of gerbils violently attacking their cage mates; I'm left wondering why such a thing happens and whether there are any steps to prevent it?  (I mean outside of the obvious steps of not mixing strange gerbils, or housing more than two females together, or bringing a newcomer into a group)

Does this just happen sometimes with established pairs?

Is it more/less likely with pairing of different sexes?  male-male versus female-female versus female-male.

This sounds very traumatic and not something I (not to mention my gerbils) would ever want to face.
