I have a related question about separated pups, and whether there is the danger
of them getting chilled and dying.

My gerbil has a first litter of two, now 8 days old. She has a primary nest,
but occasionally moves them to a secondary nest. Yesterday one pup was in the
main nest (with the mother) and the other in the secondary nest alone; when I
picked up that pup she felt cool to the touch and was not moving much.

I was very concerned; I put her back with her brother and borrowed our leopard
gecko's 40 watt plant light as a heat lamp for about a half hour and watched her
until she started kicking and squirming again. (Today everyone is fine and back
together in the main nest.)

Was I just completely over reacting? or do you need to check-in on the pups and
reunite one should it get separated?
