Gerbils do not normally attack weaker animals. They fight with animals
that are threats to their status.
If there was fighting a neck injury like this is very unusual and I
would be surprised if there were not also a lot of other injuries.
Is it possible the gerbil had a fall or in some other way injured its
neck?
As Gary says, there may have been other congenital deformities which led
to this.
