You have the right idea.  For a gerbil bite you want to wash it off with
soap and water, dry it, then put antibiotic cream on the bite.

As for your biting friend:  tap him o the nose lightly whenever he bites,
play with him a couple times a day, offer him treats from the palm of your
hand, and let him smell you if thats all he wants to do.  After a while he
will know you are the boss and that you can be nice.  He will learn to
reconize your sent and eventually won't bite.

I have two boys that used to bite my hand as a greeting.  Nothing too bad,
no blood, but I didn't want them to bite me or take anyone else by surprise.
  They were nice and knew who I was they just thought that greeting me with
a nip was what they were supposed to do.  I would just tap them on the nose
whenever they niped and they have stoped it now.  I also offered them treats
when they didn't nip.
