Hello All, I am new to this board. My son and I are now owners of 2
gerbils, a dwarf hamster and a teddy bear hamster. It all started with just
one gerbil and moved along quickly. Well we have many questions but will
start with just a few today.
     1. How much food should we give all of them daily?

An ounce to ounce and a half per animal. I use a shotglass to
measure, an ounce and a half is a full shot glass. The gerbils
and the Syrian should get an ounce and a half, the dwarf an
ounce unless it's about a year old or older.

    2. Can one train a hamster not to bite?

Yes, if you start when the animal is very young. Older ones can
also learn, but it takes longer, and you may have it still try,
especially when you are trying to pick it up. Dwarf cambells
are known nippers.

    3. Is fluff-a-bed ok to use for all of them? all it contains is wood
fibers. Linda and Tyler

No it is not. Any of the compressed products are fibrous enough
to cause problems.

They are made of cotton waste, or long untreated wood pulp fiber,
and those can be dangerous.

Use unscented undyed toilet tissue, ripped up into small pieces.
The wood fiber used to make the paper has been chopped into
very tiny short bits, and will instead dissolve into small bits that
won't hurt if ingested.

Fluffy bedding, and compressed bedding blocks ALWAYS claim
they are safe, and that they can be used with small animals. The
manufacturers will label the stuff to sell. IT IS NOT SAFE.

If you want, please email me privately about hamsters. I've kept
them for many years and bred them commercially.
