Duct tape.

A few houdini-wannabes of renown forced me to move to the silver
stuff. It will keep gerbils in (as long as they can't get to it) and things
like cats out. (unless they're clawed and persistent.)

Add a few jingle bells so they will flop at the slightest messing with of
the cage. If you are home you'll hear it.

Best method is to ban the cats from the room with the small animals.
Both of our cats have been taught about 'offlimits' rooms and their
big human mamakitty will get on their case if they even get caught
making longing eyes at that door. They have the rest of the house
and there is NOTHING behind that door (not even catnip, thats the
hall closet) that is interesting enough to bring down my wrath.

Luck.
