When I was a kid, many times we solved the "getting along" problem by bathing all the gerbils we wanted to introduce, then putting them all together.  Many times, by the time they were dry and realized that they didn't like each other, they were getting along really well.  If they weren't, we would sometimes try the whole thing again, occasionally using body spray to make them all smell alike.  Perhaps it's a bad thing to do, but it often worked for us.
