Hi Lisa,
I went through the same thing with my two girls. They are mother and
daughter. They were fine for 6 months, then started attacking each other. I
did the same as you, put them in a split cage. They also wanted each other
when apart, but fought as soon as they were together. I kept them apart for 2
months. When I let them back to each other, they were ok. I have left the
cage split with a screen. I have a house on both sides. I put food on both
sides. Whatever I put on one side, I put on the other. I bent the top of the
screen down so they can climb over to get to each other. Now, when one
doesn't want the other around, he can go to his own side. There are no fights
over food, a home, or space. It seems to be working great. It's been 7 months
now.
I think some gerbils just need their own space once in awhile! Good luck.
