>My wife of 5 weeks decided to tell me her allergies and asthma
>are being worsened by the presence of MY animals. Has anyone
>else had this problem?
Yes. Hubby brought home hamsters, then after a few months
decided they were what was causing his allergies to go ballistic.
>I am thinking about trying a HEPA filter for the room where
>my little ones are kept but have no experience with one of
>those contraptions.
We have a large one for my hubby's bedroom, which has no
animals in it. It helped him immensely. The units have a
charcoal prefilter and a hepa inner cartridge, the prefilter we
changed monthly, and bought a new hepa every year. The
manufacturer claimed three months on a pre and a year on
the inner, but it helped to change the pre more frequently.
>She doesn't complain of the smell for I do keep them very
>clean and use carefresh and aspen but claims she can't
>breathe when she enters the room.
Can the aspen. Just use carefresh. My hubby couldn't tolerate
any wood chip/wood shaving bedding.
>Anyway, I am just wondering if there is anything else other than
>or in addition to a HEPA filter I can use?
Move your animals to a low use or 'your room' sort of deal, and
use weatherstripping to make a tight seal of the door. If you
make a habit of bathing or showering daily, take care of animals
BEFORE you do that ritual; then you will spread less allergens
throughout the house.
Keeping the allergic one and the animals separate will help
with domestic harmony. Along with minimizing the allergens
put into the environment.
I have been doing this since Feb 99, when my hubby decided
he was allergic to the rodents (which ended up to be bedding,
and feed dust)
>The other option of course is getting rid of the animals but
>I can't let that happen.
I hope you can find a way.
