I had been told that Carefresh
was a good choice for allergies, but I swear I am allergic to it! And
not much bothers me. When I change the tank I sneeze, my eyes water
and my nose runs. I have noticed it only happens in the care fresh
tanks. (I also have eco fresh and a pair of gerbils who make their own
but completely shredding an entire tp roll in about 3 hours.) I did
not have this problem with aspen but several on the list have deterred
me from continuing with it. I have a huge roll of butcher paper (not
the real stuff - the stuff that is uncoated on both sides) and am
going to try it next tank change. I am still having a continual
problem with respiratory problems in the 3 wek old babies and Iam
really thinking in this dry environment in Utah, the Carefresh is
indirectly contributing, even with a humidifier in the room. I am
personally tired of the hand feeding and antibiotics and round the
clock vigilance only to lose the baby. I have cleaned and sanitized
tanks, the hand sterilizer, disinfected water bottles - numerous
times. I love my gerbils, but it is getting ridiculous. I have pups in
the tp cage and the ecofresh cages and GEE- it is amazing, no problems
there. So, maybe ok for adults but not pups and certainly not for my
immune system. I may try corncob, but I am thinking plain old paper
and change them more frequently (like weekly). At this point I could
change them three times a week and it would still be less time than I
am spending now trying to combat this respiratory thing. So, try some
different types of bedding and I swear, Carefresh is very dusty-more
so than the aspen and give them lots of toilet paper- they love to
shred it and they can still tunnel, etc. Hope those suggestions
help,
Cindy
