I agree with a post that was provided earlier on euthanizing pets that unless you are a trained professional, don't try this at home. Gerbils are hardy little animals and image the pain (physical for him, psychological to you) in a botched attempt. I would strongly recommend either making your pet comfortable and letting nature take it's course. Or getting the money together to get a professional to do this for you -- and it sounds like if you explain the situation your own or another vet would do it within your means.
