toilet paper rolls

Ok, what is the deal with toilet paper rolls? If i put a piece of card board
in the cage, the gerbils will nibble with restraint here and there for a few
days until it is gone. if I put a toilet paper roll in there, it doesn't
matter what they are doing, they have to come out that second and chew it to
shreds. What is the deal here?
What is so special about toilet paper rolls?
