Hello :o) I just thought I'd throw my two cents in on this subject also :o) I've had several gerbils now and in my opinion if where they are "flying out" of the wheel there is nothing hard that they are landing on it shouldn't hurt them and they really do figure it out in a short time. I had one a few months back (Thumper) that discovered the wheel before she even had her eyes open!!! but she sure got that thing going, we really couldn't believe our own eyes that she did it and never got hurt, now however, she gets it going so fast and with such good balance if they had an "Olympics even" for gerbils she'd win it hands down :o) She's almost a "blur" when she's really into it and it really is good exercise for them.
