You can get by without one.. Sometimes it's even
better without a wheel if your gerbils are
"wheel-addicts" and also a breeding pair. They may end
up neglecting their pups.
However, I think the metal exercise wheels, made safer
with cardboard or tape, etc, are a good idea. If your
gerbils fight over the wheel, remove it or get two. :)
