I have a very bad case of poison Ivy and need to know if my gerbils can
get
the itchies too or get sick from it. They are longing to come out but i
am
afraid! Don't wanna get my babes sick! thanx.
The poison ivy, oak, and sumac have a sort of OIL that carries
the allergens. If you have been totally cleaned up, and all the
clothing and other items you touched or could have had some
of the allergy carrying oil/plant secretion get transferred to
cleaned up, then you are 'safe'.
Be absolutely sure however, that all the allergen carrying
substance around has been thoroughly cleaned up.
You can still be suffering, and covered with calamine
lotion, and hydrocortosone or benadryl compounds,
but as long as you are in 'recovery' and not still covered
with the allergen, you will be fine.
If you accidentally brushed the couch with the hand you
got it on, for example, before you got the hand cleaned
up and treated, you would have transferred some of the
allergen, and you or someone or some other creature
can get into the allergen you left behind on the couch. So.
If you are absolutely sure it's all cleaned up, then they
can come out. Ask your doctor (if you went to one)
if it's ok if you want to be absolutely sure.
