Pine isn't real good, but it's much better than cedar.
Using 'sawdust' isn't good as it's too fine and kicks
up dust that can cause respiratory problems.
Aspen shavings (sold in pet stores and the like)
are better than either.
The tubes, are those white plastic things? The gerbils
will chew those right up. And they could splinter and
cause serious problems. Best to take those out and
use cardboard tubes from paper towel rolls (take off
any glue globs) or from the center of a toilet tissue roll.
They will happily chew these up and it will give them
something to do. You also need to provide something
very hard to gnaw on for their teeth, something made
of white pine is ok (they sell blocks with holes drilled
through them) and will last a long time.
A pair of boys would be the best choice IMHO.
