future owners of gerbils

hi everybody my name is Claudia and we are going to be owners of gerbils soon. baught the cage(aquarium) we were recomended to use sawdust.and we put some tubes (origin use as a bowl sink kit (1 1/2")wide.will that be wide enough?we don´t want to breed what is better, male or female. thanks for your time claudia
