For future reference for others who may encounter similarly distressing
situations- you don't need a vet who necessarily knows anything about
gerbils to humanely euthanize the animal. Any vet can successfully
euthanize a gerbil, which is definitely preferable to allowing the animal
to suffer until s/he dies on his/her own.
