I have a quick question about the gender of my gerbils. I got them both
at a local pet store, first Indy and then Nape the next day, after
researching and seeing that gerbils need companions. Indy was obviously a
male from the first moment ;). When I went back to get Nape, I asked for
another male. They gave him to me, and I looked, and he looked like a
female! When I inquired about this, the woman at the pet store told me that
he was just really young, and that his testis hadn't dropped yet. Well,
since this was my first experience with gerbils, (which is why I didn't want
to breed yet), I believed her. Now I've had them both for a few months.
Looking at gerbil gendering sites I now fully believe that Nape is actually
a female. However, I haven't had any babies. Now... these two sleep
together, play together, and groom each other. Is it possible for gerbils
to get along but just not want to mate?? Or maybe my male or female is
sterile? (When I first got them, they did what looked like mating... but I
never had any babies). This obviously isn't a pressing question, but I'm
very curious!!
