I think that 10 gallons is a good space for a pair.
If they are not breeding I extend the space by
layering with wire ledges/stairs, and boxes, and
hanging a wheel for ones that like it.
10 gallons is also a good space for a breeding pair.
It provides less chance for the pups to wander off and
get lost. And when they do get separated on
occassion, I can find them and put them back. The
parents spend most of the time sitting on the pups in
the early weeks and then by the time they are five
weeks and running around they are removed and the next
litter is born.
