If your gerbils have diarrhoea then it's your sense of smell, that will
notice it first. Actually diarrhoea is very rare in gerbils. In many
animals it can be caused by overindulgence in fruit and veg. But as you are
no doubt aware, gerbils do not like fruit and veg enough to overeat them.
So diarrhoea in gerbils is almost always serious and the affected animals
will look ill.

What you are describing is the normal situation where gerbils both pee and
poo at the same time. Perhap you have not noticed this before, but it is
typical gerbil behaviour. It is because they are quite clean animals.
Unlike, many other small animals, they do seem to hasve some control over
their bladder and bowels. My rats tend to dribble all the time for example
and chinchillas leave a trail of litle pellets evrywhere. Gerbils generally
dont do this.
