Hi all - we took our 2 year old female in to the best vet in the area to have a look at her, and she did a gerbil ultrasound.  The ultrasound showed free fluid in the abdomen, and cystic ovaries.  One ovary in particular was larger than the other, and so they took a fluid sample from inside the ovary and determined that there was a tumor in the ovary.  We are going to have her spayed, and hope that it has not metastisized (sp?).  She weighed 115 grams when she came in, and the drained 40(!) grams of water off of her.
Apparently the gerbils produce extra fluid when there is something wrong in their body.

Well - thanks for all your help!  I appreciate the suggestions that you had about Bhaloobasha.
