Here, Here - the only off topic responses I object to are people moaning
about OT mailings, usually those who don't seem to contribute much anyway. I
find this list very educational especially the superb contributions from
Vangelis whose input alone is worth keeping this list for.

I don't really mind the off topic stuff and if I don't want to read it then
I won't. I have learned some interesting things from the stuff that gets
posted here. I've learned stuff about Audio/Video Factory and composing
commands etc that I wouldn't otherwise have learned from the forums alone.
There are also other users here who offer support on the list but aren't on
the forums.

I have barred that thread, although I don't generally favour censorship
as a solution to anything.
However... it seems that this list is mostly used these days for
offtopic crap, and for technical queries which get referred to the
forums.
Is there still a benefit to having this list at all? Would we be better
off shutting it down entirely?
Likewise the git repository on git.infradead.org — if development is
happening on github, there's no point in just mirroring it here, is
there? I was happy to provide services (and even try to learn a bit of
perl) when Phil Lewis bowed out, but it now seems that there's a fairly
capable community around it and it's not clear what benefit I continue
to provide...
