Since the startup volume is always writeable, it works.

False; the start up volume can be either a CD-ROM (old OS), a DVD, a Network volume, etc.


Do you have something to propose as a solution to the problem? (For example, is there a way to get a list of hard drives, etc., and test each one until one is found that doesn't give an error when the program tries to write to it?)
