I have a idea for a new computer program
But in order to do it I need to be able to play .mp3 files & .m4a files
is it possible to have a folder full of them and access the folder in
a listbox
and have a play button and when the play button is pressed the music
plays?

Yes, it is definitely possible. Check out my REALbasic-made app called
Stimulus which does exactly that:

Just do a loop through a directory, checking each file's format to see if it
is an MP3 file. If it is, then add it as a row to your listbox. Then code
your listbox to play the folderitem of a selected/double-clicked MP3 file in
a MoviePlayer control.

are there any limitations as far as systems and plugins
using it on linux, where quicktime probably won't be installed?
i guess i mean does movieplayer rely on the system to play the song or is all internally handled
