Just do this: Ctrl+Space+Left Mouse = ZOOM IN Ctrl+Space+Alt+Left Mouse = ZOOM OUT
IS IT HARD OR WHAT? The way panning works in Gimp is pure CRAP. Space+Hold Left Mouse+Drag = Pan TRY IT. If you changed those things you'd break down 99% of the initial annoyance of using the pile of crap you calle GIMP, gimp is GIMPED as it is.
