Just as another option for PC, Mac, or Linux is XnView/XnViewMP. It's a great image viewer/organizer/converter and would use it regardless, but you can configure multiple programs to open an image in and then access them by shortcuts. When I find an image I want to open in gimp I just hit "Alt+1" and it opens gimp if not already open, or opens image in a new tab.
It also has the added benefit of decent support for xcf thumbnails so you can browse your gimp files, and it's free for personal use.
