Just as another option for PC, Mac, or Linux is XnView/XnViewMP.

It's a great image viewer/organizer/converter and would use it regardless, but
you can configure multiple programs to open an image in and then access them by
shortcuts. When I find an image I want to open in gimp I just hit "Alt+1" and
it opens gimp if not already open, or opens image in a new tab.

It also has the added benefit of decent support for xcf thumbnails so you can
browse your gimp files, and it's free for personal use. (No ads or nags)
