If you use for-each-ref's --format option, you could do something
like (pardon a long line):

git for-each-ref 
--format='%(if)%(*objectname)%(then)%(*objectname)%(else)%(objectname)%(end) 
%(refname)' refs/tags

without any loop, I would think.
