You are wellcome! The geany.conf file has UTF-8 encoding. I can open it in geany, then force it to reopen as exactly UTF8 and after that I see the `last_dir` value correctly, without any quotation marks or other broken chars. The system has UTF8 locale and never had any other. Actually the locale is `ru_UA.utf8`. As I wrote before, `LANG=ru_UA geany` works fine, and `LANG=ru_UA.utf8 geany` or simply `geany` causes CPU load with the appropriate `last_dir` setup. So what kind of conversion is being performed in my case? Between `utf8` and `ru_UA.utf8`? Could it fail?
