Ugly is definitely a useful tool in these situations. :)  My hypothesis that 
geany will interact differently with different DEs is apparently confirmed.

I see! The example files I had created were obviously insufficiently perverse. 
:) Now that I can see this, and how much the various color schemes in the 
distro vary, I'll try to do something reasonable for the style, which will 
occur whenever someone is typing a string (in C, but not, e.g., in Perl).

I can see that now too. Amazing how much a clear explanation (like yours) 
contributes to understanding! That helps **a lot**.
