Skif-off left a comment (geany/geany#4439) @PFlass, this file contains the 0x00 character aka U+0000 or NUL (4 or 5), so Geany recognizes the encoding as UTF-16 instead of UTF-8. Try hex-editor or maybe a text editor that can open this file in UTF-8 forcefully and delete these characters.
