WIP. Left TODO comments where applicable, but I think the overall structure
is reviewable. This should be usable in more tests than shown here.
Generally need to still:
* clean up free's in constructor in case of malloc failure
* populate xdbc_ struct members for column
* change test lifecycle management so destructor is always called (maybe
we need a C++ class to wrap this?)
