Considering the importance of the sustainability issue of the Kothmale
CMC, and for that matter all Universal Access initiatives, this is to
inform you that CIDA and ITU's BDT (Bureau de Developpement des
Telecommunications) have undertaken a collaborative initiative to
develop appropriate strategies for the sustainability of Universal
Access facilities such as CMCs. Four countries have been selected
representing four regions: Bolivia, Nepal, Malawi and Burkina Faso.
Representatives of these countries will participate in a workshop this
summer, oganized by TEMIC (Telecommunication Executive Management
Institute of Canada), the output of which will constitute a good portion
of the final report which will be tabled at the next World
Telecommunication Development Conference in March 2002. It is hoped that
the report will serve as a guideline for ensuring the sustainability of
Universal Access facilities worldwide.
