We had a few discussions relating to extremely high prescriptions, just a
few weeks ago. If you look in the archives, they're pretty easy to find.

In them is a link to an online thickness calculator -- you enter in your
prescription, the index of the material, and your lens dimensions...it
calculates how thick your edges will be. Kinda' cool, really, because it
lets you predict just how thin/thick the resulting glasses will really be.
Calculate it for the various index values you find, and see if the
difference in cost is worth it. Might be a difference of no more than
1/2mm, between some of them.

Let me see if I can find the direct link for you...

Ultimately it's going to be up to him to decide how thick is too thick.
But, be aware that a plastic frame is a good way to camouflage thickness.
Wire rimmed frames can make even a thin lens look thick...conversely, a
dramatic plastic frame can easily hide a variety of sins.

A wide temple arm is another good way, since it physically obscures the view
of the side of the lens.

Alternately he could embrace the thickness, and go for something rimless. A
small lens, with absolutely no edge to define it visually, might be less
noticeable than a big lens with a thick plastic frame.
