I live in a small town, and one of our 2 jewelers has a LASER welding
system. He is able to fix fine work, like eyeglass frames, with relative
ease.
Perhaps someone close to you has a similar system, and would be willing to
do it?
An alternate approach would be to find the identical frames, and just
remount your lenses in them. Can WalMart still get them? If so, it'll be
easy...if not, you'll have to try harder. eBay, for example, is a good
place to find frames that are out of production, as is a site called
FramesDirect.com
Of course, you are correct about the cost effectiveness. The online sites
we use are remarkably inexpensive...there is a list of preferred providers
at the top left of the main glassyeyes.com site, and we've recently
discussed (in detail) some alternative providers. And, since you said your
pair is a "few years old," it would be appropriate to have an updated
prescription, anyway.
