Back in February, I found this site and started reading up on the different cheap eyeglass websites. I know lots of people who'd love to be able to get new glasses, but just can't afford to... and I was really curious how some of these crazy-cheap frames/lenses would stack up to my $450 Flexon frames with ultra-high-index Crizal lenses.
I liked the distinctive shape of the Zenni 3157, and had never owned half-rim glasses since "glasses are really expensive" and I never wanted to pay good money on a frame I might not have liked. So I measured my own PD, ordered the 3157 in blue, and waited. It only took me about 3 weeks to get the glasses. I tried wearing them, but something didn't quite feel right... I have strabismus, and a couple of years ago I had corrective eye muscle surgery. I realized that my "eye strain" was just from muscles that I hadn't been moving as much. With my ultra-high-index lenses, I had a relatively small sweet spot, so I didn't move my eyes around as much as I do while wearing the 3157 - the 1.57 index lenses have a larger sweet spot. So the Zenni glasses actually give me a wider range of motion. I recently had an eye exam, and the orthoptist confirmed that my Zenni glasses were, optically, every bit as good as each of my three $450 Flexon/Crizal frames. She told me that before she became an orthoptist she'd sold glasses, and she was REALLY impressed that I'd gotten such nice glasses for just $26 (shipped). So that got rid of any doubt I had about the Zenni glasses. Now that I know the quality first-hand, I've just ordered 3 more pairs: the 4645 to replace my ugly/old-prescription gym glasses, and 3105 and 3252 as tinted sunglasses. (Now that glasses don't cost me so much, I'm more interested in trying unique or fashionable frames, since if I don't like the glasses, I'm out $20 - not $400.) The hard part will be waiting for them to get here. Also, I've been recommending Zenni to friends and co-workers who need glasses (or extra pairs), but just can't afford brick-and-mortar prices. I still have a local "boutique" eyeglass shop I like, where I'll go if I want a higher-quality pair or if I need to use my insurance benefits. But now I no longer feel limited by the cost of glasses, and can order a pair simply because I think it looks nice, or I want another color. (And if these three come out well, I might order the 5501.
