Many of the complaints about online glasses would be solved if we were able to see and touch them before buying. Comparing notes about particular models may be the next best thing.
My best experience with discount glasses was somewhat unusual. About 10 years ago, I found two pair of Polo sunglasses at TJ Maxx (liquidator of last season's items) that had all the same fittings as regular eyeglasses. This was way before Luxottica owned the Polo name for glasses, and the frames were actually made by Safilo, probably in Italy. They were identical except for color and metal used, and one pair turned out to be gold filled. They cost me about $30 each, and I swapped one pair of $100 lenses between them for 10 years. They're somewhat worn now, but if it weren't for the fact that very decent online eyeglasses are often cheaper than relensing or re-templing an old pair, I would have probably just kept going with these old glasses. As it is, I can still wear them if I need to or want to. This was a case of getting more than I paid for, because I was pretty sure that these frames were good quality when I first saw them. They turned out to be even better than I thought, especially the gold pair. I'm more or less doing the same thing now with the silver and gold versions of this frame from Zenni, which seem to have very nice fit and finish, especially for the price: http://zennioptical.com/cart/product.php?productid=647&cat=0&page=1 I tried doing the same thing with these specs, which on paper are identical in size, but the gold pair (made in Italy) is actually wider by just enough to need a bigger lens: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260413986533 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260413221714 --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Check us out at the oft-updated http://glassyeyes.blogspot.com!
